The Objection

The Bible says that you are cursed if you obey the law!

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."  But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith." Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them." Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree").  (Galatians 3:10-13 NKJV)

Stop trying to obey the Law because you are bringing a curse on yourself!

The Response

We find the answer to this objection in the context of the quoted verse.

First, consider the broader context.

The reader should note that Paul writes his letter to the Galatians to refute the claim that "you must obey the Law to be saved."  Therefore, we should examine everything we read in Galatians in that context.  If Paul says anything against the Law, it is against using the Law to achieve or maintain salvation.

Second, notice the specific context.

Paul says, "For it is written, 'Cursed is everyone...'".  Where is that written?  Deuteronomy chapter 11.

"See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known."  (Deuteronomy 11:26-28)

Some might say, "The people of Israel are cursed because they have not obeyed G-d." but elsewhere, Paul says Scripture has shut up everyone under sin.

Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God?  May it never be!  For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.  But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.  (Galatians 3:21-22)

All who have disobeyed G-d are cursed.

In Galatians 3:10, Paul says this: if you seek justification by obeying the Law, you must abide by every Law from birth to death.  Paul goes on to say, "No one is justified by the Law,"... so don't even try to use the Law for that purpose.

Those who obey the Law after they are saved are not under a curse.
